Farmer Training Program on “Dairy Product Processing”, funded by UNESCO

Department of Animal and Food Sciences conducted a one-day farmer training program related to “Dairy Product Processing” on 09th October 2019. This event was funded by UNESCO with the aim of strengthening the partnership between the Faculty of Agriculture, Rajarata University of Sri Lanka and the farming community. 54 farmers participated in the training program representing Kabithigollawa, Nachchiyaduwa, Rajanganaya and Nuwarawewa areas.

The objective of this training programme was to encourage dairy farmers more towards the value addition of raw milk without selling unprocessed. The event was officially commenced at 9 a.m. with the welcome speech by Prof. A.M.J.B. Adikari. The curd production process was explained by himself and Prof. W.A.D. Nayananjalie and Dr. S.C. Somasiri and Mrs. M.A.A.P. Kumari discussed about the clean milk production, yoghurt and drinking yoghurt production and Lassi and ice cream production, respectively. A parallel practical session was conducted to demonstrate all the production steps of aforesaid dairy products. Informative leaflets regarding different dairy products also distributed among the farmers to enhance awareness.

A question and answer session was held at the end of the programme. A questionnaire was distributed among the farmers to assess the effectiveness of the training programme. A token of appreciation was also offered for every farmer at the end of the training program. The event was coordinated by Mr. W.V.V.R. Weerasingha.
