Farmer Training Program on “Alternative feed sources for dairy cattle”, funded by UNESCO

A one-day farmer training program was conducted by Department of Animal and Food Sciences, Faculty of Agriculture on 20th August 2019 to enhance the awareness of dairy farmers on “Alternative feed sources for dairy cattle”. This event was funded by the UNESCO with the aim of strengthening the partnership between Faculty of Agriculture, Rajarata University of Sri Lanka and the farming community. Around 50 farmers were in attendance for the training program representing Mahailuppallama, Galnewa, Eppawala, Thalawa, Nochchiyagama and Thambuththegama areas.

The training program was held at the dairy farm premises at Thambuththegama starting with an introductory session conducted by Dr. A.M.J.B. Adikari, Dean, Faculty of Agriculture Rajarata University of Sri Lanka. Three lectures were delivered on Dairy cattle nutrition, hay and silage production and UMMB by Dr. W. A. D. Nayananjalie, Dr. S. C. Somasiri and Mr. W. V. V. R. Weerasinghe, respectively. A documentary video on alternative feed stuff was shown at the end of the morning session. At the evening session, farmers were engaged in practical and demonstrations on the preparation of UMMB, Urea threated straw, Hay and Silage. A token of appreciation was also offered for every farmer at the end of the training program. The event was coordinated by Mrs. M.A.A.P. Kumari.
